Minnesota National Guard to be activated for potential support to local law enforcement

January 13, 2021 (ST. PAUL, Minnesota) – Governor Tim Walz today signed Emergency Executive Order 21-05 allowing for the activation of the Minnesota National Guard to support of local law enforcement in response to potential civil unrest.

The Minnesota National Guard is conducting initial preparations and coordinating with local law enforcement agencies, the Minnesota Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the Minnesota State Patrol to determine specific needs and mission requirements.

“National Guard Soldiers stand ready to support State Patrol, and local law enforcement should the need arise, stated Maj. Gen. Shawn Manke, Minnesota National Guard Adjutant General. “Our goal is to keep the peace, ensure public safety, and allow for peaceful demonstration.”

Soldiers from the Monticello-based 257th Military Police Company could be on duty as soon as this weekend. The executive order provides flexibility to increase the number of Guardsmen on duty based on the dynamic needs of local authorities.

The Minnesota National Guard is prepared to assist local authorities at the direction of the Governor in maintaining security and providing for the safety of Minnesotans.
