New Ulm Field Maintenance Shop Groundbreaking

May 18, 2021 (NEW ULM, Minnesota) – The Minnesota National Guard is breaking ground on a new Field Maintenance Shop and Readiness Center in New Ulm Thursday, May 20, at 11:00 a.m.

“Field Maintenance Shops and Readiness Centers are essential networks that connect the National Guard to the public, employers, cities, and the state. This new Field Maintenance Facility will bring new capabilities to this area that support the South Central Minnesota Army National Guard units,” said Lt. Col. Mark D. Gile, Minnesota Army National Guard Field Maintenance Manager.

The new Field Maintenance Shop increases the number of maintenance bays, parking and capabilities that will allow units in southwest Minnesota the ability to train on more of their equipment. 

The second phase of this project will be to build a new National Guard Readiness Center adjacent to the Field Maintenance Shop that will bring new capabilities to the 125th Field Artillery Battalion headquartered in New Ulm. More classrooms, a larger drill floor and handicap accessible bathrooms will not only make training more assessable to the soldiers, but make for a better alternative community space in New Ulm.

“We have been working collaboratively with the City of New Ulm for years in the process to acquire the land and construct not only the future Armory, but the maintenance facility as well,” said Don Kerr, Department of Military Affairs Executive Director.

The Field Maintenance Shop is expected to be ready for use in spring 2022, and construction of the new National Guard Readiness Center in 2025.
