Year in Review: Minnesota Military Radio

In 2024, Minnesota Military Radio entered a new chapter as Tom Lyons, the program’s host for the past 14 years, transitioned out of the role and handed the reins to Retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. Doug Wortham. Doug, a respected leader with decades of military experience, now leads the program with renewed energy and an unwavering commitment to its mission. With his extensive background in service and advocacy for veterans, Doug is dedicated to expanding the show’s reach and ensuring that the powerful stories of Minnesota’s military community continue to inspire and resonate.

This year also marked a significant milestone for Minnesota Military Radio, with a total of 767 episodes produced since its inception. One of the most memorable moments was the program’s trip to France for the 80th anniversary of D-Day. This special broadcast was a heartfelt tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers who stormed the beaches of Normandy, forever changing the course of history. The trip provided a unique opportunity to honor the heroes who fought there, giving a voice to veterans and their families and ensuring their stories are preserved for future generations. It was a powerful reminder of the cost of freedom and the enduring legacy of those who served.

Another standout moment in 2024 was the live broadcast from the Mall of America, marking the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. This broadcast offered a long-overdue chance for Vietnam veterans to share their deeply personal experiences and reflect on their service. For many, it was a moment of recognition they never received when they returned home. The event became a space for healing, reflection, and camaraderie, while also educating the public on the complexities of the Vietnam War and its lasting impact on the veterans who served.

Looking ahead, Minnesota Military Radio remains more committed than ever to amplifying the voices of those who have served. With Doug Wortham at the helm, the program is set to reach new heights, forging deeper connections within Minnesota’s military community. Through powerful storytelling and advocacy, Minnesota Military Radio will continue to honor the sacrifices of veterans and ensure their legacies live on for generations to come.
